Why Brown Dog?

There was zero question that I would name my business after Oakley, my trusty sidekick of almost 10 years. Oakley joined my family in 2015 as I embarked on my graduate school journey. He was there as I paged through clinical textbooks, wrote essays, and conducted practice therapy sessions. He was so inspired by my own path to becoming a social worker that he even embarked on his own graduate school journey, graduating as a Certified Therapy Dog in 2017, the same year that I graduated with my Master's in Social Work.

Oakley is a perfect blend of all of the traits that I strive to embody as a therapist. He is playful, curious, thoughtful, and quite a bit mischievous. He reminds me that things do not need to be so serious, and that all of us could stand to cause a little trouble in burning oppressive systems down. In all his silliness, Oakley just as readily embodies safety, quiet, trust, forgiveness, and gentleness, and he is fully present in the moment (except when he might be contemplating his next meal).

In a world where people take themselves too seriously, I aim to be an Oakley.

May we all embrace life (and food) the way that Oakley embraces his two favorite treats: pizza and ice cream.
